I’ve got two left feet! can I really learn to dance? Partner dancing is like anything, you need to be taught it before you can do it. The way we teach modern jive is to minimize instructions about how to move your feet. The beginners classes and practice oportunities are aimed at people with absolutely no dance experience. Once you have the basics of Ceroc you can progress to the more advanced aspects of the dance and build on you new skill by adding other dance forms to your repertoire.
Do I need to book in advance? No. Every week there will always be a number of people there for the first time and therefore we always run complete beginners classes. These are always at the beginning of the night (7.30) and you will get most out of them if you join in at the beginning. Please get there in time.
What are the timings At most venues doors open 7.15 - Beginners class 7-30 to 8.15 - Freestyle practice 8.15 to 8.45 - Intermediate class 8.45 to 9.20 (during this time the beginners go into another room (if available) for a little more practice) - Freestyle practice 9.20 to 10.30. Except Leeds where the night is 8.00 to 11.00 (doors open at 7.45)
Do I need to bring a partner? No! Just turn up. The teaching method means that everyone has to change partners during the classes, and therefore it doesn't make any difference whether you come on your own or with friends. A recent survey at one of the venues showed that 80% of the people who come to Ceroc come on their own.
With whom will I dance? The culture at Ceroc is that everybody askes everybody else for a dance. Women ask men and men ask women. People will only decline if they are 'danced out'. And then they will often find you later for the dance they missed. To develop quickly we recomend that as well as dancing with your fellow beginners you spot those who can dance, pluck up courage and go and ask for a dance. They will say yes and you will develop much more quickly (see the next point).
How quickly will I develop? This is obviously a difficult question to answer. Progress depends on how frequently you come and how much dancing you do. We usually find that if somebody manages to come twice a week for the first few weeks and plucks up courage to get on the dance floor (after all, it's only dancing and everybody was a beginner once) they will begin to feel pretty competent after 4 to 6 nights and will be thinking of making the transition from the beginner's practice to the intermediate class.
What do people wear? As for clothes, anything goes. Come casual or dress up, which ever makes you feel comfortable. As for shoes we recommend that you avoid trainers and wear something with a smooth sole.
How much does it cost? The whole night will cost you £7. Concessions are available for full time students. We are a club so everyone has to become a member and this is a one off payment of £2.00 payable on your first visit.
